Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot 5522 New York Edition Limited 600 Examples

in New York City, Patek Philippe will kick-off an enormous, 10-day-long, open-to-the-public "Grand Exhibition" entitled "The Art of Watchmaking." The event will take place at Cipriani on 42nd street across from Grand Central Station and will feature dozens of the most important pieces from Patek's history as well as looks at all that the manufacture stands for today. To celebrate, Patek has unveiled a handful of limited edition products that we'll be covering here today. Perhaps not the most interesting but indeed the most approachable, is this new time-only Calatrava reference 5522A. Yes, "A" as in "acier," or steel. The Patek Philippe pilot's Calatava reference 5522A will be a limited edition of 600 pieces (yes, 600 pieces!) at a price of $21,547. All 600 pieces will be allocated exclusively to U.S. retailers, of which there are 89. Obviously the larger markets will be given more than those in smaller regions, but that equates to about seven watches per retailer. It doesn't sound so horrible when you hear that, but I will admit to gasping audibly when I heard there would be six hundred pieces for just the U.S. market. But, considering it's steel, has no date, and is priced less than your basic stainless steel Nautilus (which you can hardly get from an authorized dealer anyway), something tells me these will fly.

Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 "Great White"

The Sea-Dweller is seen as the Submariner’s big brother as it comes with a beefier case and a helium release valve, which allows for deeper dives. Patek Philippe Calatrava Travel Time in Platinum limited serie for gubelin

Rare and unique looking Patek Philippe watch from a time that feels so long ago - when the economy was optimistic and the future seemed so bright, back in 2003. That was when this Calatrava Travel Time Platinum 5134P was originally released. Still shaken from the dot com bubble boom, no doubt a few people of the era picked up one or two nice watches. Even the look of the watch is almost Patek Philippe's way of being optimistically futuristic. As the name implies, this 37mm wide watch case is constructed out of Platinum with a very thin in-house made manually wound Patek Philippe movement with some interesting complications. Still the watch is only 9.8mm thick. Complications aside from the time include a synchronized 24 hour hand (basically to tell you whether it is day or night and to help you figure out the time in those place that use military time on the 24 hour scale), and a second time zone. The pushers on the left side of the case can be used to advance the time zone one hour in either direction. Rolex Quartz Beta 21 Movement 5100 "Texano"

In 1962, a consortium of 21 of the Swiss watch industry’s best brands came together to develop a high end electronic watch movement. The group was called Centre Electronique Horloger. In 1967 their prototype was introduced. By 1969, the technology was perfected to the point that mass production of the electronic movement was started. The movement made its public debut at the 1970 Basel Fair, and was subsequently used by several of the manufacturers originally involved in its conception, research and design and finally its production. Rolex was apportioned approximately 1,000 Beta 21 movements. Not all of the movements were cased and sold, and the Beta 21 watches are rare. They have come to be nicknamed “Texano”. An important watch in Rolex’s history for sure. This watch has never met a polishing wheel and retains its factory sharp edges and is very clean all-around. Remarkably, this watch weighs 207 grams – ALMOST HALF A POUND OF 18K GOLD. Talk about substantial. The Beta 21’s case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 40mm wide by 40.1mm long by 12.5mm thick. The crystal is sapphire and this was Rolex’s first watch ever with a sapphire crystal. Not surprisingly, given the revolutionary technology encased inside, Rolex designed and produced a rather futuristic looking, geometrical watch case. The bracelet is integral to the case. The center of the watch, looking down from above, is round, but the case ends in a beveled edge, from which a hooded lug emerges. The bezel is fluted. Dial is the rarer gold color (versus the more common champagne) with applied hour markers, minutes and 1/5 seconds chapter and date at 3 o’clock. The dial is in perfect original condition. The aforementioned movement has 13 jewels and provides a sweeping seconds hand despite the fact that a quartz crystal regulates the timekeeping. This is watch 65X and it’s worth noting that the Rolex Beta 21 had its own unique set of serial numbers. This is a super clean example of a rare and historically important Rolex watch.

Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 17014 in Steel and White Gold Bezel

The Rolex Oysterquartz is a rare gem that some loved and others hated. Many do not realize the quartz era was a trying time for Swiss watchmakers, not all made it out unscathed. Those resilient manufacturers like Rolex thrived but with much effort. The quartz movement was once poised to overtake its mechanical counterpart but the craft that went into these movements was nothing compared to the beauty of mechanicals. Nevertheless the Datejust Oysterquartz is a very beautiful watch that mixes Rolex quality with quartz era advancements. The reference 17014 is a solid white gold watch put together by a pristine jubilee bracelet. The overall condition is mint, as the watch has little to no scratches to speak off. Every component was born with the watch.

Rolex Daytona 6263 Sigma Dial 14K Yellow Gold Case

Most people find 18K yellow gold Daytona’s but not many find the elusive 14K ones. The reason is because Rolex reserved those for the American market while the others in 18K were destined for the rest of the world. The Daytona 6263 is also fitted with a jubilee bracelet made in the USA, which adds to the overall rarity of the watch. The present watch is distinguished by the “Sigma dial”, meaning that it has the Greek sigma letters on either side of the “T SWISS T” signature below the six o’clock register. The sigma letters on the dial indicate that the hour markers are made of gold. This Daytona comes from the widow of the original owner, who loved Rolex watches and viewed this watch as a prize to be worn proudly and sparingly. The watch is remarkable for the beautiful condition and the fact that the bracelet, pushers, and case are developing a beautiful pink color. 14k gold generally has more copper in it, which can cause it to age pink over time. To find a reference 6263 in 14k with a sigma dial and in this condition is extraordinarily difficult.

Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI Limited Series in 18K Yellow Gold

Accompanied by an Omega Archives Extract confirming the official production of the present watch on April 9, 1970 and its subsequent delivery to Hong Kong. The watch also comes with an Omega image gallery box containing 20 original color pictures of the moon landings. The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 model in solid gold was created in the fall of 1969 to commemorate Apollo 11’s successful Moon landing. A total of 1,014 were produced especially for NASA astronauts, two for the President and Vice President, and the remaining were made available for the general public to acquire. The available examples were assigned an engraved dedication, Omega Speedmaster - Apollo XI 1969 - The First Watch Worn on the Moon, and numbered. The very small amount offered to the general public was available in two versions. The present watch is from the second version, with the engraving on the case back painted in a burgundy color, which complements its burgundy colored bezel. This watch also features the second version of the dial, showing a round ‘O’ in the OMEGA signature as opposed to the earlier version, which is more oval-shaped (for an example of the first version of this reference see lot 14). Preserved in very good original overall condition, the present watch is number 971 of this limited series. An example of all three casebacks made in this series are illustrated described in OMEGA, A Journey Through Time by Marco Richon, 2007, p. 605.

Rolex GMT-Master 6542 with Bakelite Bezel
