The reference 19038 belongs to the first generation of Movado's celebrated M95 chronographs, a family built around a François Borgel case and the manufacture's three-register manual-wind calibre. Movado introduced the M95 in 1939 as the three-register evolution of its 90M chronograph, a movement architecture developed by Frédéric Piguet. The chronograph works are constructed as a distinct module over the base movement, an advanced and highly serviceable solution for its day. The M95 adds a 12-hour recorder at six o'clock to the running seconds at nine and the 30-minute recorder at three, making this a genuinely useful long-duration chronograph rather than a simple short-interval timer.

The movement also has an unusual operating sequence that rewards a knowledgeable collector. Unlike most chronographs, the lower pusher starts and stops the recording, while the upper pusher returns the hands to zero. The case is equally important.
