Rolex Daytona Ref 6240 ,with Silver Big Logo Dial & MKI Pushers

In 1965, Rolex introduced the Reference 6240 as the first Daytona ever fitted with screw-down pushers. It was, in every sense of the word, a prototype: a single reference produced for just four years to test a revolutionary technical solution before it was refined and carried forward into the 6263 and 6265. That brief production window, combined with the engineering significance of the reference, makes the 6240 one of the most historically important Daytonas ever made. This example, from 1966, presents the most desirable configuration of the reference: the Big Logo silver dial paired with the first-generation MKI screw-down pushers.

Collector's Note

The MKI pushers are the defining feature of the 6240 and the reason the reference exists. Rolex engineers designed them to prevent accidental activation of the chronograph during diving or water sports, screwing down to seal the case before the 6263 and 6265 refined the system into its definitive form. The MKI configuration, with its distinctive cylindrical profile and knurled grip, was used only during the earliest production of the 6240 and is the most sought-after pusher variant among Daytona specialists.

The Big Logo dial is equally significant. On early 6240 examples, Rolex used a large, bold "Daytona" inscription beneath the 12 o'clock position, with all text concentrated in the upper half of the dial, leaving the lower portion clean and uncluttered. This typographic layout was unique to the early production of the reference and was never repeated on later Daytonas. The combination of Big Logo silver dial and MKI pushers on a single watch represents the earliest, most original, and most collectible state in which a 6240 can be found.
