The Patek Philippe Ref. 2525 is an exceptionally fascinating and historically significant reference, often described by collectors as "the last of the classics" before the advent of automatic movements in the Calatrava line. Launched in 1952and produced until approximately 1962 the 2525 was introduced during a period of great experimentation for Patek Philippe. It sits just before the legendary 2526 (the brand's first automatic), representing the pinnacle of manual-wind technology of that era. One of the most prized aspects of this reference is the case, crafted by the prestigious Wenger workshops (the same makers responsible for the 2499 cases). For the time, it was considered "oversize" with its 36 mm diameter—a size that makes it incredibly modern and wearable today. It is distinguished by its stepped bezel and fluted/faceted lugs, which create a very architectural play of light and shadow. Unlike many contemporary Calatravas, the 2525 features a screw-down caseback, a technical rarity for the period that offered superior protection against moisture. The watch is powered by the Calibre 10-200: Mechanical manual-wind movement. This calibre is celebrated for its world-class manual finishing and is considered among the finest time-only movements ever produced by Patek. Variants: Later models (often cataloged as 2525-1) might house the 12-400 calibre, which was slightly larger and thicker. The dials were produced by Stern Frères in opaline silver or champagne, featuring applied "dagger" indices and sub-seconds at 6 o'clock.
