Rolex Oyster Perpetual "Bubble Back": The Origin of the Myth

To speak of the Bubble Back is to return to the very roots of automatic watchmaking. Introduced in the early 1930s, this model was the first mass-market success to feature a rotor that rotated a full 360 degrees. The nickname—never officially used by Rolex but universally adopted by collectors (often referred to affectionately in Italy as the "Ovetto" or "Little Egg")—derives from the shape of the case back. Its pronounced curvature was a technical necessity at the time to accommodate the thickness of the first self-winding module applied to the base movement.
